GREEN-HEADED CONEFLOWER       YELLOW

Flower:  head 2.5-4” wide

Plant:  3-10’ high

     Green-headed Coneflower has 6-10 drooping, yellow ray flowers surrounding a greenish-yellow disk which turns brown and elongates at maturity.  The leaves are dark green, thin in texture, alternate, smooth and irregularly divided.  The lower leaves have 5-7 lobed leaflets and long petioles; the upper leaves have 3-5 segments and may have short petioles or lack petioles entirely.  The stems are tall, leafy, branched and smooth.

 

    Also called Tall Coneflower, this plant can be found in swamps, moist thickets and roadside ditches.
